The MDRL was envisioned by TETFund in the year 2021 with the whole purpose of making molecular diagnosis of COVID-19 available to Nigerians through an initial grant. The MDRL had since transited into a training and research centre. The MDRL now carryout Public Health Surveillance in Kwara State, North-central Nigeria in partnership with the Kwara State Ministry of Health, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control and International Collaborators. MDRL have capacity for outbreak-response in form of Community-based surveillance; Facility-based surveillance; Environmental surveillance; and Clinical pathology of diseases. The MDRL fosters scientific ideas and experimental exposure for biological and clinical researchers as well as provide students with hands-on experience with advanced research training particularly in molecular biology. The laboratory is equipped with contemporary equipment to service the research needs in life sciences. The centre applies novel tools that cut across chemistry, microbiology, haematology, and molecular pathology within a BSL-2 containment. The pioneer director was Professor Abayomi Fadeyi; Department of Medical microbiology, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences.
